in search of simplicity

This is what I’m up to right now

I’m currently in Amsterdam and my life has changed dramatically in the past few months due to a few things:

Becoming a father for the first time

On the 8th March 2018, our daughter was born. The learning curve is huge. I never realised how much I didn’t know about keeping a little human alive and happy. She’s currently the number one source of smiles in my life.

Working at Sonos

At the start of the year I joined Sonos’ European brand team to work across their online channels as a digital content specialist. The company’s products set a high bar for performance, quality and integrity. That’s been reflected in my experience of the working culture too, so needless to say I feel very happy to be there. More on this to come.

Going deeper on my meditation practice

Meditation has been a long journey for me. I’ve been meditating on and off for several years but haven’t committed to a singular practice. In some ways, I was busy taste-testing the variety of options available to me. Toward the end of 2017 I knew I’d need to commit to something specific if I wanted to make headway – at least for the foreseeable future. Zazen is my morning and evening meditation.

Reading a lot and taking notes

I’ve doubled down on my focus this year, cutting back a lot of the activities I do in my free time to focus on some core areas. Research is one of them. I’m aiming to improve this site and build momentum for some bigger projects that are in the pipeline.

Perfecting my daily routine

Most of what I’m able to achieve outside of my current 9 to 5 job is due to the fact that I create a consistent practice outside of work. My morning routine is the basis of that. With a new job and a new kid both arriving at the start of this year, I’ve had to balance my expectations about what’s possible. But keeping the minimum-viable-routine going has not only been possible but also taught me more about the value of being flexible with your expectations.
